Are Sewing Classes Worth it?

So, you got a new sewing machine for Christmas, and now you’re wondering: are sewing classes really worth it? Before I dive into why I believe they are, let me start by saying that you can absolutely find free classes on YouTube. There are countless content creators who dedicate their time to making lessons that are easy to follow and perfect for beginners like you.

I’ve tried some of these online classes myself when I wanted to learn a new skill, and there’s definitely value in using them as a resource. However, here are three simple reasons why I think taking an in-person sewing class is worth the investment if you can manage the cost:

1. The Personal approach

If you’re anything like me, having someone there to guide you when you’re trying something new makes all the difference. There’s nothing quite like having your questions answered in real time. While online videos are great, they can’t predict every question you might have as a beginner, and sometimes you’re left with more confusion than clarity.

2. You Can Make Whatever You Want!

I’ve had students create everything from tote bags and pillow covers to jeans, dresses, and even historical costumes. When you take a class in a studio, the possibilities are endless. You’re not just limited to pre-set projects; you can work on something that truly excites you. Some of my student project are below

3. Clothing That Fits You Perfectly

As an average-height woman (okay, maybe a little on the shorter side), finding clothes that fit just right is a struggle. I’m willing to bet many of you feel the same. Sewing classes give you the skills to adjust or make clothing that fits your body perfectly.

For example, I recently bought a jumpsuit that was way too long. Thanks to my sewing skills, I hemmed it, and now I wear it everywhere!

Of course, there are even more reasons to take up sewing, including studies that show making things with your hands can improve mental well-being. But what do you think? would you take some sewing classes?
