Sewing Classes and Your New Third Space

Writer: Nerissia Nerissia

In 2022, I started meeting with my sewing mentor, Chris, once every two weeks to sew.

At the time, I was juggling a lot—building my business, taking on custom clients, teaching, and working the night shift to build capital for The Workroom.

My schedule was packed, but that biweekly session with Chris was something I always looked forward to. It became more than just time to sew; it was a space where I could breathe, create, and reconnect with why I started sewing in the first place.

For two years, we kept up our biweekly sewing sessions. No matter how stressful the week had been, I knew I had that time carved out for me. We’d work on different projects, exchange ideas, and talk through techniques. Some days were productive, and other days were just about being in the space, surrounded by fabric and the hum of the machine. It was my reset button, a way to unwind without feeling guilty for stepping away from the daily grind.

Looking back, I realize that those sewing sessions gave me what many people search for—a third space. A third space is somewhere outside of home and work where you can just be. It’s a place for community, creativity, and connection. For me, that biweekly sewing meetup with Chris was exactly that.

Now, with the sewing workroom, I want to create that same feeling for others. I know what it’s like to crave a space where you can come in, work on a project, and be around others who understand your craft. That’s why the sewing workroom is more than just a place to sew—it’s a third space for designers, hobbyists, and creatives looking for a welcoming environment to grow their skills through sewing classes, share ideas, and simply enjoy the process of making.

If you’re looking for a place where you can step away from the stress of daily life, focus on your creativity, and connect with a community that shares your passion, The workroom is open to you. Whether you’re experienced or just getting started, having a third space dedicated to sewing and taking sewing classes can make all the difference.

Do you have a third space? If not, maybe it’s time to create one.
